We have a sleep number bed that sits on top of two big plastic boxes that serve as a box spring of sorts. The mattress simply sits on these boxes and that’s all there is to it. We previously made a bed skirt to cover the unsightly black boxes. However, because sleep number mattresses are just filled with air they are quite light and ours was sliding around a ton which was pretty annoying. We had resolved shortly after moving that we wanted to make a bed frame to contain and hide the boxes and also keep the mattress from sliding around.

This project was pretty simple – all I did was buy a few 1 x 12’s and cut them to length and Kreg them together. My wife added cotton batting and some fabric that matched our custom headboard. I also used this opportunity to further secure our headboard which was coming a little loose due to my poor construction the first time around. Previously, I had made the headboard as one single piece and then added legs to the bottom of it. Where I had joined the legs to the headboard itself had started to become quite loose. Instead I should have made the legs one solid piece that went all the way to the top of the headboard – this would have made it more structurally secure.
